The Jungfrau Train

Switzerland’s sky-high complex of restaurants, attractions and buildings known as Jungfraujoch “Top of Europe” includes Europe’s highest altitude railway station, the third highest peak in the Bernese Alps. Jungfrau mountain (4,158 metres) is one of the main summits of the Swiss Alps, located at Interlaken region.

Visitors can reach Jungfraujoch station by the famous Jungfrau railway from Interlaken and Kleine Scheidegg. It lies below the mountain’s summit and is connected to the Top of Europe building, which includes panoramic restaurants (Expensive experience). Several tunnels lead outside, where secured hiking trails on the crevassed glacier can be followed, in particular to the Mönchsjoch Hut. Board the 102-year-old cogwheel Jungfrau Railway at Kleine Scheidegg for the 1-hour climb to the Jungfraujoch station. Most of the ride is inside a long tunnel crossing through the Eiger and Mönch mountains. There are two intermediate stations inside the tunnel give passengers the chance to experience views typically reserved for expert mountain climbers. On clear days, take in sweeping Alpine views extending as far as Germany’s Black Forest.

How to Get There? Kleine Scheidegg station is located about 17 miles south-east of Interlaken. Buy Jungfrau Railway tickets online or at any Swiss Federal Railway station. For a longer trip, book a multiday panorama train excursion, including a Jungfrau Railway segment, with Jungfrau Tours.

The train journey to the highest train station in Europe
The train journey to the top of Jungfrau on the “Jungfraubahn” is an absolute must! Jungfraujoch Station is the highest train station in Europe and is built inside the mountain so that the trains can run throughout the year regardless of the weather. The fares are pretty pricey but well worth the money as the views from the Sphinx viewpoint- some 3571 metres up- are simply breathtaking. There are a few restaurants at the top if you get hungry and there is even a cocktail lounge if you fancy a tipple before making the trip back down the mountain! If you get the opportunity, pick a day when the weather is good to make the most of the views of the lake and the valley below.
